Tenebrae – Maundy Thursday 9 April 2020

Tenebrae – Maundy Thursday 9 April 2020

If you would like to, you can gather a few objects to prepare:

  • the colour for the Tenebrae and Maundy Thursday is purple so if you have something that is purple, like a cloth or tea towel, lay that down as a reminder
  • a Tenebrae service would usually have 9 candles all lit at the beginning of the service – 8 purple ones which are blown out after each reading, and 1 white one which symbolises the light of Jesus
  • if you have a candle, light that as a reminder of the 9th candle, the symbol of the light of God never going out, always remaining even when things seem bleak

Welcome

Let’s follow the steps of Jesus through sharing our sacred stories.

John
Don’t Be Afraid (CCLI Song # 1531247)

Don’t be afraid.
My love is stronger,
My love is stronger than your fear.

Don’t be afraid.
My love is stronger
and I have promised,
promised to be always near.

We invite you to pray the Lord’s Prayer in the language and translation of our choice or the translation provided here.

Our Father in Heaven,
Hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come, your will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us today our daily bread
And forgive us our sins
As we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
And deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours
Now and for ever.  Amen.

The tomb is shut.
The night descends.
But this is not the end of the story.
